The treatment of Lyme disease is based on the use of antibiotics for a period of 10 days to 4 weeks, depending on the clinical signs and stage of the disease. Although erythema migrans is not painful and the redness disappears spontaneously, treatment (10 days of doxycycline) is recommended to prevent further progression of the disease. Even at an advanced stage of the disease, treatment with antibiotics (for 2-4 weeks) is usually effective. Longer or repeated treatment is unnecessary and potentially harmful to health.
Prevention is based on taking measures to avoid tick bites (where possible), inspecting the body for the presence of ticks and removing them, and detecting any clinical signs. Preventive treatment with antibiotics is not recommended.
